Thread: Anime Recommendation and Suggestion Query

  1. #281
Since you liked the Melty Blood series (Tsukihime), then you should check out the other type-moon series, Fate/stay-night.

Hmm, Im not sure about that. If its the games, I would agree, but the two animes have a very different feel, and are quite unrelated.

Im thinking a vampire anime would be more apt, like Blood +.

Fate Stay Night is still a good watch though, with a great ending I must say. But like always, Id recommend playing the game instead of watching the anime.

I've heard Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime actually take place in the same universe believe it or not.

If you do want a new series like Tsukihime, you can look forward to the first of several Kara no Kyoukai movies later this year. It's the precursor to Tsukihime, staring a woman named Shiki, who is far more accomplished than the boy Shiki at killing things with the death lines. The red-haired witch in Tsukihime is also related to one of the other characters.

But since that is a while off, it's not much of a recommendation. I wouldn't advocate Blood+ though. Compared to the movie it's based on, it's downright awful. Horrible pacing, slow, and repeated plot (within it's own series no less!).

I would suggest a much older series like Arc the Lad. It's got a similar feel to the overall effect of Tsukihime. Starts out rather innocently, only to turn rather dark around the middle.

Elfen Lied is of course, another obvious choice. Violent, deep story, and a little forbidden romance.

Maybe it's because I watched them around the same time, but RahXephon is a decent compliment to Tsukihime. It's a mecha, but has pretty dark twists later on in the series.

I'll add Pumpkin Scissors for the same reason, though it is a post-war action series and not a mecha.

Woot kara no kyoukai movies are coming!!

Havent seen arc the lad though, Ill give that a try.

Blood+ is not one of my favorites, but its definitely not as bad as ryll makes it sound. Some people really like it too. Most people also comment that the movie is subpar compared to the show, and I tend to agree with them. BUT, the negative comments about the show are true, but it still has its good points I believe.

I am always looking for new series to watch, because I tend just to find one I like and not watch any others in fear of not liking them. (I'm weird - don't ask.) I tend to like any type of anime, yet the only thing tying all of them together is some fantasy element. My favorites are: Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, G Gundam, and Paranoia Agent. I've always want to watch another mecha anime but I don't know which ones are good.

Mecha? Have you seen Code Geass then? I think it's a damn good series. Well, i can't say it's a full-mecha anime but you should consider watching it =)

I'd go with Escaflowne, Full Metal Panic, Eureka seveN, Gurren-Lagann, and Rahxephon also.

If you havent seen most of the mecha mentioned above or evangelion, Soukyuu no Fafner would be a good choice. I really like that show, except for some crappy dialogue. Many dislike it because of its similarity with other shows, so maybe you should try it while you are still "unsoiled".

I've started to watch Escaflowne first, it is good so far. Then again I am only on episode two.

IMO, Gurren Lagann isn't really mecha. It belongs in its own genre: OMGWTFBBQ. FLCL is in there too.

Im in a fix right now. Im running out of good stuff to watch. Can anyone recommend several titles that are not so well known but good? It doesnt have to be great, just good enough to watch, and the less known the better, since if it is a popular series, I probably would have seen it.

You're better off with older titles, but I can pump out a comprehensive list of obscure titles.

Kenran Butoh Sai: The Mars Daybreak - Underwater pirate mecha on Mars!

Good Witch of the West - Not really my thing, it was okay, but it's obscure and pretty different. It's a romance I guess.

Mahoromatic - Not so obscure, but worth the mention. Alien-slaying robot becomes the maid of a young boy during her final days of life.

2x2 Shinobuden - Totally pointless wacky ninja action.

Bokura Ga Ita - Really good romance series. You may have seen it, but it never really garnered that much attention.

ARIA - Apparently Kraco and I are the only two fans of this Slice of Life series.

Final Approach - Short series, 15 minute episodes of a government enforced marriage and a bit of a harem.

Iketeru Futari - Another 15 minute episode series. Pervert attempts to seduce the cute girl in school. Through perseverance, succeeds. (The manga goes on quite a bit further)

Grenadier - Samurai/Guns action. Heroine reloads using her considerable "assets."

Hyper Police - One of my favorite series actually. Bounty hunters in a world where monsters and humans coexist.

Jubei-chan - wacky storyline about a young girl who inherits the fighting skills of the famous swordsman Yagyuu Jubei through a Lovely Eyepatch. (There is also a season 2).

Izumo -Takeki Tsurugi no Senki- - So-so series, based off an h-game. Classmates get transported to a different world.

Mezzo: Danger Service - spin-off series of the hentai movie Mezzo Forte. The movie is actually very good and should be watched first. They're pretty much a mercenary service. Whatever the client requests.

Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru - Not that obscure, but a harem series disguised as a yuri series. It was actually pretty funny. One of the better tsundere characters out there.

Outlaw Star - Similar to Cowboy Bebop, was overshadowed by it and Trigun because they are from the same couple of years. Space outlaws.

Otogizoushi (Heian Arc) - Absolutely visually stunning series by Production I.G. Minamoto no Raiko, a famous samurai well-known for his archery skills, is dispatched to recover a legendary gem in 972 A.D. He falls ill, and his sister disguises herself in his place. (The latter half of the series, eps 15-26 take place in modern day and are not that entertaining.)

Rizelmine - Another government enforced marriage series. A "baby wife" is forced upon a middle school boy. Well noted for having one of the most abusive relationships between main characters. It's supposed to be comedic, but after a while...

Sorcerer Hunters - Fantasy-Adventure series, much like Slayers, but with an S&M undertone. Pretty funny actually.

Starship Operators - What I consider the most realistic spaceship fighting in anime. Day long capital ship approaches leading to very in-depth strategies, and actual battles usually ending in a single, devastating shot. Contains political intrigue.

Triangle Heart - The OVA series that led to the eventual spin-off series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Nanoha's older brother and sister are martial arts specialists, and are assigned to bodyguard a friend of theirs.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito - Hatsuki is a high school girl living alone with her classmate, Hatsumi, who she has a huge crush on. On Hatsumi`s 16th birthday, she is suddenly surrounded by green light and disappears in front of Hatsuki. She manages to follow Hatsumi ending up in a place called the Great Library, which is full of different worlds stored in books.

Downloading Kenran Butoh Sai, Hyper Police, Starship operators and Otogizoushi.

Hmm, I have doubts about Final Approach, Iketeru Futari, Mezzo, Izumi, and Triangle Heart. Though Ive heard of them, I never downloaded these before since it seems to be H or harem and nothing else.

Ive seen the rest. Thanks for the suggestions. This should keep me occupied for maybe 3 days after downloading.

EDIT - Kurogane communcation seems really... not good. Cant seem to find blue legend shoot, I watch angel heart, but City hunter, maybe next time.

Downloading Betterman, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I cant find a torrent for Heat guy J, can someone help?

Ill download licensed royal, and maybe Legend of galactic heroes when I have the space, since its huge. The others Ive seen, and most of them I remember were pretty good. Thanks for the great titles as well.

You've seen everything on my list? Damn, you're good.

BTW, Triangle Heart is not harem... has some good action. Final Approach is harem, but it's short episodes (10 minutes each) fairly enjoyable.

Mezzo DSA doesn't have any H... just the prequel. You can always find the edited version, since it has no H in it... great action though.

Definitely do not discount Mezzo Forte or the other h-movie by the same director, Kite. In Mezzo Forte (different from Mezzo, the series), the hentai seems tacked on, and it's almost completely irrelevant to the story, but as Munsu said, the action is really great. It's a violent and occasionally gory movie, but it's fairly outstanding as anime action films go. It's also pretty funny in an oddball way, a trait inherited by Mezzo: DSA.

In Kite, the hentai plays a big part in the development of the heroine's character. It's necessary to see what she's become from who she used to be. I don't believe there was ever an edited version of Kite like there is for Mezzo Forte. If you're generally turned off by all hentai, then they're not for you. In these two films, hentai definitely takes a secondary role.

For Blue Legend Shoot, you'd probably need the japanese name... Aoki Densetsu Shoot.

And Kurogane Communication is pretty good. 10 minute episodes, and the later half of the series has a pretty interesting plot and action.

Hey, dont get mo wrong. Im not turned off by Hentai, since I am a guy. I just dont want to watch a long series with nothing but fanservice when I could have spent the time watching the other stuff you guys suggested. If you guys say that much, Ill give those stuff a try.

And I watched Kite, and loved it. Not only because but also due to the Hentai.

EDIT: Being able to understand and speak Japanese, Im embarassed to say I didnt consider the title Blue Legend Shoot as Aoki Densetsu Shoot. It translates so directly I feel like an idiot. Im going to download it now.

Just saw that the songs for triangle heart are from KOTOKO, thus I am downloading them now. If this keeps up, I will end up watching all of the stuff I havent seen yet on the above lists.

Apparently, I was mistaken about final approach. I have seen it before, and it was fairly interesting.

Is there any sort of official blog or site etc that'll announce all upcoming anime tittles? Or are they kind of all over the place depending on their producing company, and we'll have to check there?
