Only if you think you can be positive about it...

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.

Hibike! Euphonium is better in every way.

There's a few really stand out episodes of K-ON, usually involving their teacher or Yui's idiot-savant power, but most of it is moe filler.

Honestly...there is (edit: an infamous) doujin out there where Yui accidentally ODs on like sleeping pills or something, and the rest of the cast deals with the aftermath. It has more character development in like...75 pages than the entire franchise has.

You should watch a couple of episodes of it to know what it is. It's a pretty well known title, after all. If it captures your interest, continue, if not, drop it.

Ok, thx. Guess I'll watch it some time. Have to finish some others first, though.

Speaking of which: I'm at episode 2 if Rahxephon. Does it get better?

K-ON was pretty good for the first 5-7 episodes, then the rest of S1 got slightly stale.

S2 was the much better Slice-of-life segment of the two.

I liked it. That said, I need to watch that K-ON movie now.

    If it's not Isuzu-chan Mii~

Episode 19 is so fucking good, I remember the number even 16 years later. Burned into by brain for all eternity. But the rest of it is meh. The music is great, the OP is one of the best in the entirety of anime, but the series overall, is a pale reflection of Evangelion.

This might belong to the manga forum, but I'm coming from an anime-fan's perspective, so hear me out:

I'm currently playing Xenogears on my psvita. I also found out about this old movie, the first Gainax-movie apparently, called 'Ouritsu Uchuugun: honneamise no tsubasa', which looks fantastic.

My question: Do you know of any truly great manga that feature a similar mature artstyle (not the same, just similar in feeling) that are still waiting for an anime-adaption? I'm sick of all the moeblob-designs that, while serviceable, are really boring. I'm glad we've got Jojo and Karakuri, who deviate from the current norm, but it's so rare, and these 2 are also rather bizarre. I want something that's just down-to-earth, like anime in the 90s were (Record of Lodoss War, Akira, NGE, etc).

Any manga of note like that?

I guess Battle Angel Alita (BAA skipping the last volume, Last Order, Martian Chronicles), but parts of Last Order get really weird.

Glass Mask, if you consider that the anime adaptations thus far will never get close to where the series is now.

The Korean series The Breaker, but bear in mind the first two-thirds of the second part, New Waves, is a slog and a half, but the latter third makes up for it entirely, and the author and artist apologized to their fans for messing up the planning and pacing. Part 3 might be a while though.

    Change 123 to a degree.

Quality of story drops off pretty quickly after that, but "truly great" is very subjective. There are some truly great series out there, even among the moe-blob and "low-quality" art style.

I meant in terms of artstyle and presentation (=realistic), sorry.

Thx @Ryll. Alita is what I mean, the others not so much. I'm looking for detailed, rather realistic (but not boring!) looking manga, no matter of which genre. Something that's "big", but got overlooked by anime studios so far and might eventually get picked up. Like BERSERK.

Uh...Berserk has been made into anime two or four times. And the first time, really well done. So I'm not sure what you mean.

Even Alita has gotten one OVA. The Alita big budget Hollywood live action movie comes out next year (supposed to be this year but they moved it back so it could have a better chance).

I KNOW. That's why I'm wondering if there are masterpieces like Berserk left that are currently manga-only.

Shin Angyo Onshi (the movie doesn't cover the truly great stuff, the actual meat of the series).

    Angel Densetsu.

    Franken Fran.

    Tokyo Crazy Paradise.

It only has a pitiful amount of translated chapters out, but you might want to keep "The Fable" on your mind. It's very much seinen and kickass in a mature way, not shounen way. You know, an adult, competent protagonist who doesn't care about the small stuff. A jolly good series based on the first ten or so chapters. Although if you are looking for epic stories, this might not be it. It's a gangster story, after all.

I'm looking for a very old anime/cartoon (I think it's actually a US-production). It must be like 20 years old +/- some years.

    All I remember is:

    - pink smoke monster
    - anti-smoking message (the monster wanted to make the hero kid start smoking)
    - at least as kid I thought it had really good animation
    - the whole thing had a somewhat creepy atmosphere

That's it. I've been trying to find its name several times in the past, but I just can't find it. Maybe you can. Thx!

Not sure what you're asking for manga wise, but here are a few you can look into which I have enjoyed (though probably not finished reading yet):

    Vinland Saga
    Akumetsu
    Ares
    Sengoku Youko
    Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer
    3x3 Eyes
Anything from Naoki Urasawa (Pluto, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Happy!)
    Blade of the Immortal
Vagabond (seems to be on a long hiatus though)
Eden - It's an Endless World!
    Psyren
    The Ravages of Time
