Thread: Anime Recommendation and Suggestion Query

  1. #541
I've been putting off watching the GiTS series even though I own the first movie, so I guess it's time for that one. And Real Drive also looks really nice from the Anidb pic... The comedies however, I've seen most of them, and the others, like Soul eater, well they don't tempt me. I watched the first ep of soul eater and it just didn't do it for me...

    Thanks for the tips though.

Well, here's the thing. I'm looking for to genres, "ROFL comedy" or deep as deep can be, good story and awesome music deep.

Anything that contains this is on the list of what I want to watch. But when I say comedy, I don't want it to be lucky star fun or kanokon fun, I want it to be so fun I will fall of my chair like Fumoffu and Golden Boy. Oh, and I don't want it to be crazy fun and weird like Excel Saga :P

    Please help me.

Edit:........ Well, if not in those two category's, just something totally awesome
For deep and awesome music, I'd try Kaiba. Sure, very unique and strange animation, but it's surely the deepest series this season in my opinion.

I realized I forgot films (excepting the franchise ones).

    Continuing the "Deep" set:

Makoto Shinkai films look deep into what it means to be separated from the people we care most about.
Hoshi no Koe (Voices from a Distant Star), Beyond the Clouds (The Place Promised in Our Early Days), 5 Centimeters Per Second and even his short [read: 5 minutes] film She and her Cat.

Then we have Satoshi Kon's films, testing our concept of what is "real."
Perfect Blue a psycho thriller, Millennium Actress a bit more whimsical and a good look a two great imaginations, and finally combining the two in the penultimate trip-out movie, Paprika.

    and I'm not even done!

While most of Miyazaki's movies deal with lighter fare, there are a couple of deeper ones.
Princess Mononoke is perhaps his deepest and darkest film, but I also got a lot out of Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle.

I'll end it on one more film that really makes you think, though it's a little lighter and more slice of life.
Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro Poro). About a woman reminiscing on her childhood when she visits home.

I definitely second Jungle wa itsumo Hale no nochi Guu. This, I think, is one of the most underrated anime of all time. It will make you fall off a tree, even knowing you will die.

Green green I do not recommend unless you love ecchi.

Lol, reading your earlier conversation with Munsu a few pages back made me pick up Hunter X Hunter about 3 weeks ago. I was a bit iffy about it at first but I liked it a great deal.

So I am going to recommend it to you once again. Its good.

EDIT: Oops, these are all manga, only some of which have anime adaptations. Well...you were reading Naruto, and I'm too lazy to change this list now that it is written, and it is still a really good list of series that will appeal to shonen readers.

In any case, read a few pages back in this thread. Almost every two pages someone asks for recommendations based off Naruto and Bleach and that's it. Just do a little digging, it's not like the question hasn't been asked 20 times before.
    ---------------------------------------------------------

Pfft, I'm mildly offended you only asked Munsu.... j/k

I'll try to stick to straight shonen, but I'm going to mix in some seinen, just for a more rounded recommendation.

Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn! - This one was not really my thing, but a lot of others like it.

Battle Angel Alita and Battle Angel Alita: Last Order - [Seinen] Excellent cyberpunk, lots of fighting, even some high minded philosophy and psychology, and oh yeah, even a tournament or three.

Berserk - [Seinen] Huge epic, lots of gore, lots of medieval fighting, lots of deaths. Continues well beyond the end of the anime, and only gets better.

Black God - Plenty of fighting, contracts (think Fate/Stay Night) and superpowers. All centered around the idea of semi-divine beings and that every person in the world has two other people that look exactly like you.

Bleach - Given, though mostly for completeness purposes.

Claymore - [Seinen] Not quite as heavy as Berserk, continues well beyond the end of the anime and only gets better.

Cross Over - One of the very few sports series I like. Basketball centered, art by the author of Suzuka. Not Naruto-style shonen, but just as engaging, with a little less on the humor and more on the ecchi. [Do not confuse with Cross Game, a sports/romance title]

Fairy Tail - Highly recommend this one for the shorter story arcs (not dragged on for months/years like Naruto/Bleach). Really funny, good art, great characters. [Same author as Rave Master below.]

Flame of Recca - Simple as can be, Two and a half Tournament-Style story arc, art sucks in the first few volumes, but gets better very quickly. Humor, good characters, a little bit of romance for the fans of that, and a huge variety of "weapons."

Great Teacher Onizuka - [seinen/shonen] Not really a whole lot of fighting per se, there is some, it's just not the focus. A definite recommendation for any fan of manga/anime, detailing the accounts of one of the most dedicated fuckup of a teacher as he brings the school he works at together and through a variety of crises and events.

Gunsmith Cats - A little more of an adventure title, but follows the escapades of two female guns for hire (the good kind) in 70s/80s/90s (can't remember) Chicago.

Historys Strongest Disciple Kenichi - Martial arts, lots of it, and a decent helping of comedy in the beginning.

Kekkaishi - manga of the popular anime of the same name. Demons, barrier wielding priests, etc.

Kurohime - Adventure/romance title of the infamous gun wielding witch Kurohime on her quest for revenge towards those who cursed her into the body of a child.

Let's Bible - Fitting for your name. Deliciously horribly offensive title by the two authors of Shin Angyo Onshi (so the art is phenomenal). Just two chapters long.

Mahou Sensei Negima - Long running manga by the author of Love Hina. Do not believe the anime or the *shudder* live action version is in any way representative of this title. Fun at the beginning, lots of mage combat by the later/current chapters.

Peridot - [seinen] Good art, lots of martial arts combat, definitely a more mature series given the way the art is drawn and some of the issues dealt with. Short, but very enjoyable.

Rave Master - Same author as Fairy Tail as mentioned above. Expect similar art and storylines, though Rave's are a little longer. Sword fighting and abilities aplenty.

Sekirei - [seinen] Heavy of the ecchi, lots of girls, lots of fighting, lots of humor, destined to end in a tournament style battle royale. Anime starts this summer/fall.

Shaman King - Long running series about summoning ghosts and other spirits to fight each other for total dominance of the the Great Spirit.

Tokyo Crazy Paradise - This one is actually a shoujo title. However, the art is fantastic, it's about yakuza in an alternate 2025 (give or take a few years), and there is a very good mix of bladed combat and gun fights.

That ought to give you a good start, I'm sure I forgot a few along the way though.

I definitely second the Claymore suggestion too, what an awesome anime that was. I'm about to pick up that manga.

go for it! He's so damn right, I'm sending you the prove with a PM , you just wait.
not only that... the art is soooo great too. It's simply so well done, I didn't read many different mangas, but berserker had the best art-style so far... so detailed and the dark atmosphere is so nice too.

The Shaman King anime is a little lighter than its manga counterpart, but just make sure you get the Japanese version and not the sliced and diced 4Kids version.

That said, while from the outside and the initial arc or two of Shaman King seems kiddy, reality sets in fairly quickly and it is anything but.

As a reference, Rave Master and Hitman Reborn are a considerably more kiddy than Shaman King. So it's about the same as Naruto, but death is a large focus of the series...so take that as you will. Like Bleach with a lot more macabre, but not as much as say...Soul Eater (which goes so over the top it becomes funny).

I couldn't get past the first episodes

Sooo kiddy and the fights were sooo boring

  17. #557
That's only the beginning, it gets much darker later on... it's darker than Naruto and the likes.

First half of the series is the Hunter Exam, after that it's when the real fighting begins and the fights are much better than most shounens out there... Naruto included.

You're missing out in quite a few of the most awesome characters in the shounen universe.

Also the later half of the Hunter Exam is awesome, people being killed left and right, etc.

I'll second Munsu's opinion, even though I only read so far into HxH, and I've never seen the anime adaptation.

If you think HxH is kiddy, you are in for a big surprise. The material dealt with is way beyond Naruto (until recently, which has also gotten darker than when it began long ago) and makes Bleach look like it was written for 9 year olds.

I'm sure you will never regret watching Hunter X Hunter as it is among the best series out there in my opinion. I don't find anything disturbing regarding the fishing rod though.
