Thread: Anime Recommendation and Suggestion Query

  1. #1401
I don't think there's anything to recommend to him other than him keep trying top animes around and see what he likes.

It really isn't an issue of finding "something like this" since he really isn't looking for a particular type of series, just something that feels good to him... which is too vague a way to look for something other than, "try this, this one I enjoyed".

With that in mind, here are some he could try not already mentioned (or I missed)... though some will definitely fit the mold of "style over substance" he might not like:

Now and Then, Here and There
    Twelve Kingdoms
    Ergo Proxy
    Ghost in the Shell
    The Daughter of Twenty Faces
    GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka
    Cowboy BeBop
    Planetes
    Kaze no Yojimbo
    Kiseijuu
    One Outs / Akagi
    Hellsing Ultimate
    Kingdom
    Master Keaton
    Key the Metal Idol
    Twin Spica
    She, the Ultimate Weapon
    GunGrave (particularly the past portions)

I'm sure he can find something within those to tolerate.

    Well, why not.

I prefer more simple and "realistic" (if you want to call it that) fighting over that too. Stuff can be cool without overpowered moves... there is nothing wrong with combat and exchanging blows per se, but no need to build up a punch or strike for 5 minutes through chanting/channeling some super power.

Try Cowboy Bebop for example. He most likely knows that one already though.
Maybe the Lupin movie? Always gets that "oldschool" feeling going for me.

And there is Boku dake ga Inai Machi currently airing, ya know. If he actually likes to pay attention instead of brain afk-ing through it, he might get some fun out of it. If he knows and likes the movie "Butterfly Effect" he'll like this one too, or even more since this has a murderer in it.

For all we know he might like stuff like Usagi Drop too (calm and heartwarming story)... seems to be the "hit or miss" type of guy.
I'd recommend everything that I'd recommend someone who doesn't watch Anime on a regular basis. That means high production value and as few clichés as possible, or at least not shounen or harem stuff.
If he's into "harder" stuff, maybe something like the Berserk movies. Ya, doesn't fit the "mystery" setting as much and it's fantasy, but *dark* fantasy (I like to compare it to The Witcher).. and the list you gave us is in my opinion all over the place anyway so *shrug*

I think shinta's right. This guy's into mystery. That's as pinpoint as you can get to his tastes.

Alright, this is gonna be oddly specific what Iīm about to ask for, but it just randomly came to my mind, and before writing a novel about it myself, Iīd like to know if a story like this already exists:

Basically, is there an anime that prominently features the multiverse theory (every possible scenario is real in one of the infinite universes), where a society/group/whatever of individuals has formed that noticed that nothing matters, because everything is real in some universe, so trying to achieve something is meaningless, EXCEPT for the bond between those individuals that noticed that fact. And then the story is about how those individuals try to do something, whatever.

Is there anything with such a philosophical concept?

"She's the only non-loli girl in the show, your honor!" will be my defense in court

Noein maybe? I don't recall that anime all that well or how it approaches aspects philosophically, but at least I think it addressed the multi-verse angle.

Of course, I know and LOVE Noein, but itīs not really touching on that. The multiverse being a topic by itself is not what Iīm asking for. Iīm specifically asking for a group of people who realized that there is hardly any meaning in anything at all, and only continue to stay motivated to live because of those other people from other parallel universes who realized the same. Itīs oddly specific, I know ;D

Yeah, that's why I specifically mentioned that I don't recall much of what went on in Noein, I got what you were asking for. Nothing really comes to mind.

Multiverse itself is incredibly rare as it is. Parallel universes there are plenty, but multiverses I'm having trouble thinking of some. Adding those characteristics you mention on top of it, the answer will most likely be a "no".

But I'm curious myself, hopefully someone will come up with a better answer.

Well, parallel universe are part of the multiverse theory. But yeah, Iīm not talking about a show where, say, two parallel universes have some business with each other. That has been done to death ;D

Just watch Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World and Paprika. Neither are multi-dimensional exactly, but they still get you where you want.

That and neither are nihilistic and depressing. If you're adamant about getting that specific setting and not that specific message, you're not going to find anything.

I suppose you could just watch episodes of Haibane Renmei in between. Or the last two episodes of the original Evangelion series and End of Evangelion repeatedly.

    edit:
In all honesty, you're asking for a series that is Sora no Otoshimono, but only from the limited perspective of the antagonists, including parts they've never shown in the series/movies or manga. Which doesn't exist. You're going to have to fabricate the experience by mixing and matching thematic series and interspersing episodes to send yourself on that emotional journey. Expect to have to watch like...12 hours of anime all at once. Marathoning two series, alternating episodes, would be the only way to do this.

    It's like a wine pairing!

Are there anime youīd recommend for doing that? ;D

And yeah, the ending of NGE comes close to what I mean ... or rather, itīd be the start. Imagine Shinji now meeting other people like him. Thatīd be it!

Different question, donīt know if this is the right topic to ask it, but I donīt want to make a new topic:

Do you guys know if there is any long-running manga series that is rumored to be turned into an anime, that could fill the vacuum created with HXHīs end? Something that is of enormous quality.

You want this thread. We have a whole category!

Well, it's missing the whole "rumored to be turned into anime" component.

    Also, dated thread sadly =(

    Edit:

Not sure if you watched it already, but there's Nanatsu no Taizai. One season already aired, seems like there'll be a 4-episode special this Summer, and I believe a second season not long after if you want to give it a shot.

Of course, you put the caveat of "enormous quality", not sure you'll find something that will fit that mold.

This one is definitely not it.

There's also the return of D.Gray-Man, which initially had a 2006-2008 anime adaptation, but now there's an upcoming D.Gray-man HALLOW series which looks to continue the story.

Of course, Berserk coming out this Summer as well, but I was focusing pretty much in shounen series...

I was really thinking along the lines of popular shounen series, yeah. It feels like there hasnīt been anything good recently. I cannot bring myself to watch Fairy Tail, which, from what Iīve seen, is an even worse version of One Piece. Bleach has long ended. Naruto, well, I read the manga, no interest in the anime. Thereīs Dragon Ball Super, but thatīs mostly nostalgia driven, itīs a shit show.

I feel like HXH left a gaping hole, like when LOST and Breaking Bad ended in the context of US-tv series. Nothing on the horizon that might be able to fill that hole? I donīt read any manga, so maybe you guys know of a series that would be perfect to stand next to HXH, Bleach and One Piece? (preferably closer to HXH than OP)

Ofc I know about Berserk, I made the thread here lol. But Berserk is kinda old, and I donīt trust this new anime to cover a satisfying amount of the story ... ffs, even if it covered the entire manga so far, itīd be forced to stop because of Miura playing shitty Idolmaster games!!11 >_<

Never gave D.Grayman a chance, but it looks rather wacky. Is this new "Hallow" series a remake or continuation? If itīs the latter, I might give the existing anime a shot, otherwise Iīd wait for the new one.

As far as I know Hallow is a continuation to the story. We'll have to see once it arrives.

Btw is Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai any good? I recently re-discovered it. Never watched. Just saw its opening and found out that itīs a Gainax-anime, which usually makes it a must-see. Any opinions?

I suppose at the time it was fairly unique. But I don't think it has aged all that well. Subsequent series have done coming of age series better. Absurdist humor series have been done better. This series (and Mahoro's 2nd season) started Gainax's dark age. FLCL did it better earlier (and I am currently infamous on the irc channel for my opinion on that series).

I've never had the urge to rewatch Abenobashi ever. If you can get it easily, sure, watch it. But I wouldn't bother looking too hard for it.

I did love the OP though. Can't go wrong with a Hayashibara Megumi...R&B song or whatever it is.

@Mfauli - Have you seen Fate/Zero already? I remember you telling us once that you haven't touched the Fate series.
